Our Team


Board of Directors

MUJER's Board of Directors is composed of dynamic, diverse and engaged women in our community. MUJER has executive committee as well as Public Relations, Fundraising, Programs, among others. All Board members are part of one or more of those committees.

President

Alejandra Cabezas is a Nicaraguan feminist. Her life's goal is to engage in the broadening of active participation of women in society. Alejandra has a M.A. in Public Policy - Development from Carleton University and a B.A on Journalism and Communication from the University of Wisconsin. Alejandra became involved with MUJER as a volunteer in 2006, later that year she became the co-coordinator of MUJER’s Leadership Training Program. She became a Board member in 2007.

Vice President

Sayonara Mairena is a legal counselor (from Nicaragua). For over 18 years, she has advocated for visible minorities and the disadvantaged, mostly women, disabled people, immigrants and refugees on different issues that impact their lives. Even though she has been involved in many different organizations most of her volunteer time and effort have been dedicated to work with MUJER.   She became involved in MUJER from its early years. She has been the President of the Board for the last couple of years.

Secretary

Carmen Miranda, originally from El Salvador, has an Honours B.A. in Political Science with a focus on International Relations. Carmen started volunteering at a young age with Amnesty International, developing a passion for social justice issues.  Carmen has worked for international non-governmental organizations in Canada and Europe that promote human rights, and now at a community level with Mujer.  Currently, Carmen works in a community agency with immigrants, refugees and women, advocating for their rights.

Members

Camila de la Maza is a lawyer from Chile, where she worked in Family Law and domestic violence.  She arrived in Canada in 2008 and began her participation with Mujer as a volunteer.  In 2009 Camila participated in the Human Rights and Gender Equality training, and later remained involved in MUJER as a volunteer in various projects.  Camila has always worked passionately for social justice and gender equality and hopes to continue doing so in Mujer.

 

Alejandra Fuentes is originally from Chile and has been living in Canada for over twenty years.  Alejandra has a Community Worker
Diploma from George Brown College which has allowed her to continue advocating for women’s rights and social justice.  Alejandra began
volunteering at Mujer in 2009 and recently joined the Board of Directors.

 

Consuelo Llanos has extensive experience working with the Spanish-speaking community at a large providing group and individual clinical counseling and support for immigrant women through their traumatic experiences during childhood and/or adult lives. Consuelo’s education background is in psychology.  She is member of the OACCPP. Consuelo has been committed as a Board Member of MUJER since 2006.

Staff
Executive Director

Lilian Valverde is a feminist, political activist and an advocate for the elimination of all forms of oppression and discrimination against women. She has experience working with and for women and children in different settings in both Chile and Canada.  She has founded and co-founded many organizations including: Immigrant and Visible Minority Women network (1983), Multicultural Assistance Services of Peel (1982), Latin American Coalition Against Violence on Women and Children (1991), Canada Network on Violence against Immigrant Women in Canada (2002) and MUJER (2001). Lilian also has extensive knowledge and experience addressing issues of integration and violence.
