MUJER had a Re-launching event on September 21, 2007. 50 diverse women from the Latin American community in the GTA, funders and political figures attended this exciting event.
At MUJER, we are extremely proud of the progress we have been able to make considering our limited resources. Our event was an opportunity to celebrate MUJER’s past and present accomplishments with our partners, volunteers, founders, funders, and staff. It was also an occasion to develop new alliances and partnerships. It was a chance for our youth to meet our political leaders working in and for the development of women. Attendants met some of our socially engaged young leaders, who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting the development of women through their involvement with MUJER.
The afternoon was full of sharing stories on how MUJER has touched the lives of different women. Women from different generations, beliefs and backgrounds came together and shared why MUJER is an important organization for them and why it must continue.
On behalf of MUJER, we thank you all for coming out and demonstrating your ever lasting support.

Talk of Equality Second Forum on Violence

Promoting Healthy and Equal Relationships among Youth:
First Forum on Violence Prevention
When: Saturday November 26, 2005
Where: Bloor Collegiate (1141 Bloor Street West)
What time: 1:00 pm-5:30pm
What is a Forum?
"A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion
and often including audience participation"
Why a Forum on promoting healthy relationships?
The level of violence among youth, school drops-outs,
teenage pregnancy, violence against women and children,
are escalating issues in our city. The situation for
people of Latin American origin in Toronto is not very
much different: women, children and youth experience
violence; our youth are lacking sufficient self-confidence
and self-esteem; adult role models around them may not
demonstrate healthy relationships. In this context and
as a matter of prevention we need to do something involving
the community, including male and female adults who
are the shapers of youth, but with an emphasis on youth
who are definitely the future of any society.
What is the Forum about?
We are planning to have a whole afternoon dedicated
to explore issues of violence versus healthy relationships
throughout activities such as workshops (music videos,
theatre, journalism), discussions, graffiti, photographic
exhibits and literature readings. We expect to identify
issues, mechanisms and strategies for promoting healthy
relationships in our community. The aim of the Forum
is to engage members of Toronto's Latin American community
in discussions, reflection and actions on how to prevent
and end violence in our relationships and to promote
healthy, equal relationships.
So, you are strongly encouraged to get involved in
this initiative. We believe that each person has a say
in this issue, and we invite you to share with others
what you have to say.

Promoting Healthy
and Equal Relationships among Youth: Young Latinas
on Leadership Training
October - November 2005
Mujer has identified an escalation of violence against
women and children in our community. Issues of violence
facing young women are often a reflection of larger social
problems. It is Mujer's goal to strengthen the community
response to the increasing violence in intimate relationships
experienced by teenagers and young adult women in the
Latin-American community in Toronto. Training was geared
towards young Latin-American women on how to promote healthy
relationships and how to address, prevent and end violence.
Mujer is proud to have offered the training program to
Young Latin-American women:
- Between the ages of 18-25 years old (flexible).
- Committed to become an activist against violence against women.
The Leaderships Training included:
-
THEORY: 8 training workshops of 3 and a half hour, one evening a week between October and November, 2005.
-
PRACTICE: starting mid January until the end of February, 2006

Fundraising Night
of MUJER
Friday, June 11, 2004

Photos from the party.
Over 300 people attended our 2nd Spring Fundraising Party last
Friday at the prestigious Lula Lounge. The hugely successful
event was full of “calor” and enthusiastic dancers;
prizes, dance classes and live music filled the lounge well
after 2am to the sounds of Ricky Franco and his P- Crew
Orchestra of 12 piece Urban Salsa and with DJ Jose Ortega.
The receptive group of people who attended the event have
commented on " the wonderful time", "the
excellent music - both live and DJ", and that it
was "very well organized". They look forward
to the next party organized by MUJER and we are also looking
forward to our next event!
We want to express our special thanks to our many donors
and sponsors, musicians, DJ, to Lula Lounge.
We send a BIG THANK YOU to our committed volunteers for
their time and generous contribution in helping MUJER
to continue its work with and for Latin-American Women.
International Women's Day 2004 Celebration
Friday, March 5, 2004

Photos from the International Women's Day 2004
Celebration.
On Friday, March 5, 2004, more than 150 women from Latin America,
Canada and from other countries met to celebrate International
Women’s Day with a day of sharing, community building
and education. The activities, discussions and speakers
focused on the theme for the event which was “Latin
American Women in Leadership Roles.” There was a delicious
luncheon, gifts for all participants, and a program that
featured arts, culture, politics and an interesting panel
discussion. The participants in the event also decorated
a large banner with beautiful designs and personal messages
of support for our International Women’s Day celebration.
This event was organized by MUJER—the Latin American
Women’s Organization, and the Davenport-Perth Community
Centre. The two objectives were: 1) To celebrate International
Women’s Day and 2) To recognize the importance of
and promote women’s activism and leadership in the
Latin American community.
Our celebration began with a luncheon, during which time
Lilian Valverde, the coordinator of MUJER, spoke about the
significance of International Women’s Day, and about
the struggle for women’s civil rights, equality and
justice. She noted that in Latin America, “despite
the efforts, actions and successes achieved by society as
a whole, and by women in particular, social injustice has
not been diminished significantly.” Lilian pointed
out that here in Canada, like in Latin America, women continue
to experience violence, inequality in the workplace and
discrimination on the basis of gender, race, class and origin.
This illustrates the lack of true accessibility and diversity
in the educational system.
Next, Ana Portillo, a woman from the Latin American community,
spoke about her experiences as a single mother trying to
raise three daughters in Canada. Ana told us about her pride
in being able to educate her children and develop her own
business to support her family. All of the women in the
audience were then invited to think about and discuss events
and accomplishments in their lives that made them proud
to be women. Some women then shared their personal stories
with the entire room, to much applause and support.
The final portion of the program was a discussion panel,
featuring three prominent women from the Latin American
community who are active in politics, activism and academic
work. Magali San Martín, Alejandra Bravo and Jacqueline
Barragan shared their experiences as leaders and spoke about
the importance of having women in leadership positions in
the Spanish-speaking community in Toronto.
Thanks: We would like to express our appreciation to the
individuals and organizations that made the monetary and
material donations that enabled us to serve lunch to 160
people. The Davenport-Perth Community Centre donated 100
lunches, prepared by the Caribbean women’s catering
group “United Voices,” as well as the gifts
that all participants received. Others whose donations made
our event possible include: Sistering, Parkdale Community
Health Centre , Anamaria’s Salon, Ivette Jacque, Monica
Gamboa, Gaby Frias, Sayonara Mairena, Julia Sanchez, Barbara
Williams, Irene Altamira, Cindy La Parra, Eva Portillo and
Alejandra Priego, Gilda Gomez, Mariela Soto, Alejandra Galvez,
Sandra Godoy.
A special thanks goes to the 20 or so women and men who volunteered throughout the day, working to make sure that everything went smoothly. Without their tremendous effort and cooperation, the success of our women's day celebration would not have been possible.
