MUJER's History

MUJER was officially established in January 15, 2002. It was incorporated as a non-profit organization in February, 2003.

The idea of having an organization like MUJER resulted from Latin American Coalition to End violence against Women and Children’s (LACEV) Encuentros organized in 1995 and 1996.

In June of 1997, a Steering Committee was established in consultation with Latin American Coalition to End Violence Against Women and Children, members and women activists from the community. Its mandate was to initiate the development of the framework, mission and philosophy for our "dream organization". It took several years of discussions and consultations with diverse groups of women to complete the first stage in setting the organization’s framework.

In November of 2001, the Committee held a large consultation with women in the community to set some priorities around services, programs and activities for the organization. It was once again evident the need for an organization to take the lead in promoting the integral development of Latin American women in Ontario.

In the prevailing political and economic climate, we are confident that by channeling Latin American women's organizational skills, professional knowledge and life experiences, we will be able to contribute to the survival and growth of our own community, and also to the enrichment of the Canadian society at large. May this be the beginning of MUJER-STORY!
